Prince Harry’s glaring contradictions in memoir that left some claims mysteriously missing

Two years ago today, Prince Harry sent shockwaves around the globe with his startling memoir, Spare. ‘

The explosive book saw the Duke accuse his brother, Prince William, of pushing him into a dog bowl during a dispute over Meghan Markle, allege that King Charles was envious of William and Kate, and claim his father denied Meghan the opportunity to join the royals in Scotland as the late Queen was on her deathbed.

This book followed a series of eyebrow-raising tell-alls, including their infamous interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and their contentious Netflix series.

Many anticipated the book would elaborate on some of his previous allegations. However, to the surprise of many readers, some of the most significant points from previous interviews and TV shows the couple have given were not mentioned at all.

Not only that, but some of the accounts Harry did include seemed to directly contradict previous admissions made by the Sussexes. Despite the release of a paperback version of the memoir, which has sold more than six million copies, in October, no further updates or additional chapters were added, a move seen as a potential peace offering to Charles, William, and the rest of the royals. One of the most significant points that emerged from Harry and Meghan’s explosive chat with Oprah Winfrey was when they alleged that a senior Royal had questioned the color of their unborn son’s skin.

The couple sent shockwaves through the British monarchy when they spoke of their disgust at “concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born”. This even prompted Prince William to defend the royals by saying: “We are very much not a racist family.”

However, this incident is not something that Harry addresses in Spare.

When questioned about it in an interview to promote the book on ITV, Harry backtracked, telling News at Ten’s Tom Bradby they did not label the Royal family as racist. During the interview, Bradby said to Harry: “In the Oprah interview you accused members of your family of racism”, the Duke snapped back, saying “no I didn’t”, adding “the British press said that”.

In a further snipe at his family, Harry denied he’d “describe that as essentially racist”, retorting: “I wouldn’t, not having lived within that family.”

The Duke once again refused to name the individual concerned, saying: “The difference between racism and unconscious bias, the two things are different.

Also in their explosive Oprah chat, Meghan talked about experiencing suicidal thoughts when she was pregnant with Archie and claimed she was prevented from getting help. It was also something she discussed in the Netflix series and claimed she wanted to go to a place to get help during her mental health struggles, but “wasn’t allowed” because of “how that would look for the institution”.

Prince Harry revealed that he was “devastated” when he couldn’t protect his wife, Meghan Markle, during her suicidal thoughts and confessed that he “hated himself” for how he managed the situation. In his book ‘Spare’, he describes finding Meghan in tears, confessing she didn’t want to live anymore.

He further narrates how they attended an event at the Royal Albert Hall that evening because Meghan “didn’t trust herself to be at home alone”. However, he did not reiterate the allegations of being denied help for Meghan in the book.

In a tense Sandringham Summit regarding the Netflix series, one of Harry’s most explosive claims was that his brother William “screamed and shouted” at him. The Queen had summoned the now King and his sons William and Harry to her Norfolk estate to resolve the Megxit crisis in January 2020.

It was ultimately decided that Harry and Meghan could not have a half-in, half-out arrangement. Harry claimed that it was during this meeting that William’s yelling left him terrified.

However, the book does not mention any instance of William “screaming and shouting” or Harry being “terrified”. Harry only mentions that his brother “complained about a story in the morning papers suggesting that he was the reason we were leaving”.

In the same section of Spare, Harry recalls a conversation with his brother in the gardens of Sandringham where he expected to be lectured. However, he adds that it didn’t happen and that “Willy was subdued. He wanted to listen. For the first time in a long time my brother heard me out, and I was so grateful”.

One previous claim that caused confusion from Harry and Meghan’s Oprah interview was their assertion that they married two days before their official Windsor wedding in the garden of Kensington Palace. Meghan told Oprah: “You know, three days before our wedding, we got married. No one knows that.”

She added: “But we called the archbishop and we just said, ‘Look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world but we want our union between us.’ So, the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the archbishop of Canterbury.”

However, in his book, Harry clarifies the confusion stating that the ceremony in the garden was “unofficial, non-binding, except in our souls”.

After their engagement in 2018, Meghan and Harry shared in a joint interview that they were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. When asked if it was a setup, both Harry and Meghan chuckled, with the former Suits actress confirming: “Yes, it was definitely a set-up – it was a blind date.”

However, in their recent Netflix docu-series, the couple disclosed that they had actually FaceTimed before meeting in person for the first time at 76 Dean Street in London’s Soho.

Interestingly, in his book, Harry doesn’t mention them FaceTiming, only that they exchanged messages prior to their first date. .

Royal fans with keen memories might also question the section where Harry describes what Meghan wore on their first date at Soho House. Recalling their initial encounter after weeks of messaging, Harry says she donned a black sweatshirt, jeans, and heels.

Despite admitting he knows nothing about fashion (he later confesses he only shops once every six months, and only at TK Maxx), he notes that he could tell she was “chic”. He admired her “no frills” look at their first meeting, describing her as “heart-attack beautiful”.

However, Meghan has previously stated that she wore a blue dress for their first meeting.

Meghan Markle, during an ITV documentary, was reunited with her stunning Givenchy wedding dress and revealed a special detail. She had a thread from the dress sewn into her veil as her “something blue”.

Upon seeing the dress for the first time since her wedding during ITV’s Queen and Commonwealth, she exclaimed: “My goodness, it’s amazing, isn’t it? ” She pointed out a particular detail when inspecting her veil, saying: “Somewhere in here, there’s a piece of… did you see it? The piece of blue fabric that’s stitched inside. It was my something blue. It’s fabric from the dress that I wore on our first date. It’s nice to see it again. It’s beautiful.”

However, there might have been a slight mix-up as Prince Harry remembers Meghan wearing a blue dress on their second date.
